My small but mighty school is located in New York City. Although my students live in a middle class community, a good portion of them do not come from middle class families. Budget is determined by student population. In 2020, we experienced a reduction in student population due to families moving out of state or to a more suburban area. This affected the budget for our school tremendously. We lack access to supplies and resources that should be available to all students in all schools. In addition to not having supplies and resources, our school does not have a formal art or music program. Having access to the arts fosters creativity, critical thinking, and emotional expression, which is essential skills for elementary students. I am a special education teacher for grades 3, 4, and 5. I provide academic intervention and specially designed instruction for students to help them meet their IEP goals.
