  • Outfitting a Family of Teenagers with Love and New Clothes

    Funded Oct 12, 2017

Michelle & Ed and Life Essential Supporters, I really don't know how to explain the impact you are having in our school community! In this family there are 6 boys! They are all working hard on growing up and becoming young men, and they were super excited to get these new clothes, shoes, and personal hygiene items. The whole family was thrilled! I just spoke with Dad. He told me that the boys were feeling "fancy," and he thanked me again and again for thinking of their family with this project. The thanks really belongs to YOU! As I told him, there are "perfect strangers" who are our Donors Choose Friends who care deeply about and support our community in so many ways. Thank you for your love and generosity!

As you can see in the photo, there were some beautiful items in this project. Running shoes, collared shirts, hoodies, jeans, and personal care items. These items are sure to boost the boys' self esteem and help them feel like they fit in at school. Feeling good about themselves and having confidence will positively impact these boys' personal and academic lives. Thank you so much!

This family has a special place in our hearts. Many of the office staff and faculty wanted to thank you! You can see our school nurse, a student teacher, some of the office managers in the photo. We all thank you whole heartedly for making a difference in the lives of the boys in this wonderful family!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lomax

  • Helping a Friend Get Back to School

    Funded Sep 15, 2017

Thank you so much for being a part of our village! One student reached out to help another, and you generously supported her efforts and brought the project to life! Thank you so very, very much for caring about these two amazing young women and by reading their work and supplying basic needs to a wonderful student.

When the friend who wrote the grant was asked what this experience meant to her, she replied, "I was able to help someone who really did need it, and that feels great!" The student who received the backpack, pants, shoes, pants, and jacket was beyond thrilled. She wanted you to know that she felt happy that "people who don't even know me want me to succeed." She mentioned that she is saving one pair of shoes for her first day of high school next year. Both young women are so kind and bright and aware! Thank you for supporting these young women as they finish middle school this year and head off to high school.

    We appreciate you so much!”

  • ASB Working Its Magic

    Funded May 5, 2017

Thank you very much for funding our project! All of us are in ASB (Associated Student Body), and we are already using all of the materials you bought for us! Thanks to you we have better quality posters that look great around school. The students in our ASB class don't have to worry now about having enough paint, glitter, markers, or tape, and the money that we would have had to use for those supplies we can use for other things (like a DJ for the dances!). Finally, we have more supplies, so we can make more posters to let students know about important events that are coming up. Your donation really helped out the whole school! We are very grateful to you! Thank you for making our school better!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lomax

  • Winning with the Girls' Basketball Team

    Funded May 5, 2017

We are on the girls' basketball team, and we are really grateful for all of the equipment you have donated to us! The ref jerseys, the practice uniforms, the clipboards, whistles, balls, and ball bags are all super amazing! The whole team is really excited to use the new equipment. We are looking forward to a great season, and all of the supplies you got for us will really help us out. We are hoping to be undefeated!

As you can see in the pictures, the supplies were unpacked, and we delivered them to the coaches. The coaches were super happy, too! We were glad we were able to write the grant and help get this equipment for our team. Thank YOU so much for helping us make it come true!”

  • Gardening & Saving Water with Mrs. T

    Funded May 15, 2017

Thank you so much for funding our grant! We asked Mrs. Taylor how these materials have helped her class, and here is what she said,

"These tools have changed my life! The wheelbarrows are amazing! We had old, rusted, broken wheelbarrows that needed air in the tires daily. The new ones are sturdy and can be used as a dolly! The students are already using them to transport super heavy pots/plants/containers around the garden.

We are using all of the tools to prepare the soil and clean up. We are trying to create a xeriscaped garden with drought resistant plants, and we really needed the hoes to weed and keep the grass down around the raised beds. Gardening can be messy, so the brooms are invaluable!

The Canon camera will help students document our work in the garden. We will be working on digital portfolios this year, and the whole science department will have access to the camera. So many kids will benefit from your generosity. Thank you!"

We were happy to help out our teacher and all of the 6th grade Science students. Thank you for helping us help them!”

  • Football for Days!

    Funded Apr 5, 2017

It is so fantastic and awesome to have these new footballs. We finally have new footballs so that EVERYONE on the team can practice, and EVERYONE in a class can partner up. These footballs are amazing! They all have new laces. They are not flat! They have lots of grip! We are setting up our teams, and we can't wait to play!

We have learned a lot in this project. We learned about cooperation in this project because we had to work in a group. We also learned that helping other people helps us feel good. It gives us a spark on the inside. Finally, we learned that writing is fun when you have a real purpose. It's also complicated because grant writing is different than other writing. In grant writing we have to have more than just give claim, evidence, and reasoning. We have to think about our audience and we have to go shopping and think about what the school needs.

This was an amazing experience for us. We got to make kids, coaches, and teachers happier with our footballs. Thank you for donating to our project. It wouldn't have happened without you!”

  • Adding Love to Our Bookshelf

    Funded Apr 4, 2017

Thank you soooooo much for the bookshelf, copy of Remarkable and the class set of Thirteen Reasons Why. We love reading in our class. We read during SSR and during English Language Arts. Reading is an important part of how we learn because it makes learning fun and interesting. We have read Wonder, Swear to Howdy, Stuck in Neutral, Esperanza Rising, Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, The Giver, and What the Moon Saw. We were out of class books to read until you funded this project!

We can't wait to read Thirteen Reasons Why. When we opened the box of books, we were jumping up and down and screaming. Literally....we were! We are super excited to read this book. People from other classes were happy, too. Here are 13 Reasons Why:

    1. They're new.

    2. We wrote the grant.

    3. We watch the series on Netflix.

    4. The book is about bullying.

    5. The book talks about real problems teenagers face.

    6. It helps us be aware.

    7. Kindness is a theme in our class.

    8. It's really interesting in the way it's written.

    9. We love the characters because we connect with them.

    10. The book has lots of suspense.

    11. There's an audiobook.

    12. It shows the importance of our actions.

    13. YOU funded it!

We learned so much from this project. We have learned one way to work for what we want...we can write grants, and people like you, who share our values, might fund it. We also learned that working together we can accomplish a lot. Thank you again for funding our project. We are going to start reading the book on Monday! Thank you for making this happen. It means the world to us!”

  • Helping Out a Great Teacher

    Funded Apr 5, 2017

Thank you very much for funding this grant! Mr. M, the pre-service teacher in our classroom, and I are using these resources to do a project-based unit on what it means to be educated. Students are reading the novel, What the Moon Saw, and engaging with a variety of learning experiences that require reading, writing, speaking, listening, drawing, and presenting. In addition, they will be crafting poems about how they see themselves. There resources will be put to good use!

My students who came up with this idea and helped me write up the project were super surprised that it got funded, and they were amazed at how many resources you funded for our class! They feel very proud and happy to be a part of this grant. Mr. M was overwhelmed with your generosity! He said that if he ever doubted human kindness, you and the students have restored his faith. Now this wonderful pre-service teacher will be able implement the projects he has been creating for our students. Thank you!

Thank you for believing in our students and for supporting our classroom! We appreciate you so much!”

  • Fact or Fiction: Media Literacy in Ms. L's Class

    Funded Apr 4, 2017

We are super excited about getting all of these resources! We are going to use them in media literacy projects. Our teacher is showing us how to know if websites are valid, and we are learning how to tell the difference between fact or opinion. These resources will help kids who can't afford supplies and makes sure that we have enough for all of our class to use. We are stocked up!

Right now we are doing a unit about what it means to be educated, and we are looking at lots of different sources: videos, websites, and a novel. We will be using these supplies to make bumper stickers that show our opinions on a variety of topics. Thank you for giving us these resources.

We have learned so much doing this project! We really don't want to fall for things that aren't true, and we want to know when information comes from a reliable source. Finally, we learned a lot be doing this grant. We learned about ethos, logos, pathos, and about Donors Choose and grant writing. Grant writing will help us in writing college scholarships. We will be able to explain our values, talk about what we want to achieve, and tell why college is important. Thank you for giving us this learning opportunity and for funding our project!

    We appreciate your support!”

  • Brunelleschi to Buckminster Fuller: Chromebooks for Reading, Writing, and Researching

    Funded Mar 18, 2017

I wrote this grant feeling that it was not likely to get funded because it was simply too expensive, yet you all made this dream a reality! Thank you so very much! Having 20 computers for students to use in our classroom makes teaching and learning so much easier. Whether we are writing or researching, coding or making movies, students have the devices they need to accomplish the task. What's more, we are not using the department's computers, so they are open for other teachers to check out. This really benefits the entire school. We are ALL very grateful!

The students LOVE using technology. They use the laptops in a variety of ways. They research topics for deeper understanding; they use Google Earth to see various locations around the world; they take virtual field trips; and they design everything from puppet show stands to fidget spinners using computers. Please know that the technology you have provided is engaging hundreds of students each day in their learning! It's a beautiful thing to see!

I want to thank you for believing in public education. Now more than ever it is important that we stand together in solidarity to support this institution that strives to provide equal access to education to all children. At our school, we are very grateful for your extremely generous donations. You are making difference in the lives of many, and we appreciate you so much!”
