  • We All Begin Together: Classroom Projector needed.

    Funded Mar 21, 2024

Words cannot express how much your contribution has supported our scholars for the remainder of their school year. Fortunately, scholars had only three weeks without a projector, but when it arrived, oh, did the learning SOAR. Scholars were able to assess their understanding of complex ELA topics, while also friendly competing with their peers using various online platforms such as Blookit, Quizizz and Kahoot. Oh, the intensity to win but also to master the concepts.

In preparation for the state exams scholars were able to narrow their completion time using a classroom timer which was posted on the projector.

But most of all, scholars were able present their Social Studies and ELA Final Projects. For Social Studies, scholars researched current events that highlighted an aspect of their identity. They connected that event to a moment in history and attempted to answer " was the issue resolved? Why or why not?" In ELA, scholars had a menu of choices which included making a music video, and or public service announcement about a topic in the novel.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lindsey

  • Picture This: One Camera That Can Change Multiple Lives

    Funded Aug 18, 2018

Thank You so much for your generous contributions. This year, the incorporation of a document camera has increased students ability to understand complex ELA and SS topics and has worked towards fully engaging our visual learners.

What have we done? Students were modeled how to annotate. Along with that, students used the document camera to present their work and receive valuable whole group feedback to improve their writing.

Students have also used the document camera to teach their peers. The most endearing moment came when a student during extended day, used the document camera to model to a small group, the difference between analysis and repeating with a text is saying. Students who struggled with this topic got to visually see what analysis looks like and were able to have it be explained from a peer (which always matters more in middle school)

This could not have ben done without you. Thank You for your generosity, your care and support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lindsey

  • Core Ready: Reading Materials for Grade 8 Scholars

    Funded Aug 28, 2014

Your contribution has created an amazing experience for the 8th grade in English class. For example, with the first novel Inside Out and Back Again, students had an opportunity to learn about the history and culture of the country of Vietnam. Located in the photos section, students had the opportunity to assess their comprehension of characterization by building the primary character HA. Using the text, students had several Socratic seminars in English where they had an opportunity to ask in depth questions about the novels to their peers and their peers respond critically about language structure and content.

The novel To Kill a Mockingbird was used in our Taking A Stand Unit. With the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, students created plot diagrams for each chapter, were exposed to more Socratic seminars discussions on the complexity of race, structure, and content in the novel. Also, due to the content of the novel, students had an opportunity to see the movie Selma. Using the story of Atticus Finch, students are currently in the process of creating their own where they will have to take a stand on a modern-day civil rights topic. Students will present their speech to the class using persuasive techniques such as pathos, ethos, logo, figurative language, idioms and a host of other persuasive techniques.

this type of higher level learning and critical thinking could not have been done without your contribution to be student. I am so grateful that I have had the opportunity to expose my students to how academic but also fun and modern Language Arts, Reading and Critical Thinking can be. Thank You is not enough to express how I feel and it's not enough to show how much of an impact your contribution has made on the lives of these students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lindsey

  • Core Ready: Reading Materials For Grade 7 Scholars

    Funded Aug 11, 2014

It has been an amazing experience, using your donation alongside EngageNy curriculum in Grade 7 English Language Arts. Students have had an opportunity to learn about the conflict in Sudan and use this information to come up with solutions to modern day conflicts in our and other countries as well.

Students are currently reading the novel Lyddie. with this novel, we have talked about working conditions. Students created a compare-and-contrast essay where they had to compare and contrast the working conditions of two places of employment by the main character. Students created an Acrostic Poem for Lyddie. Finally students have just completed an Argument Essay where they had to argue should or shouldn't Lyddie sign the petition at mill. Thank You is too little of a word to express how much myself and students are appreciative of your contribution. We couldn't have done this without you.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lindsey
