  • The Gift of Reading

    Funded Dec 17, 2014

Upon receiving the products you generously funded, the students were so ecstatic. They immediately tore into the materials and began reading all the titles aloud. We only had a few books from their favorite author, Mo Willems, and they were jumping for joy when they saw the quantity of books that came in the mail.

We use these books for independent reading time. For first graders, especially Special Education Learners, this can be a very challenging task. The students are so engaged in the texts that they don't even realize they are reading all on their own!

Recently I have noticed huge improvements in their literacy skills because of your incredible gifts. Students who used to refuse to take books home for homework are begging to take home Elephant and the Piggie texts! And now I have the materials to let them keep them home for a number of days and really master the texts. I even have been able to begin sending older texts home for them to start building their own home libraries. I couldn't do my job without your help!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. K.

  • Send In The Clowns!

    Funded Nov 4, 2014

When the students found out that we were going to the circus they were ecstatic. (As were the adults!) None of them have ever been to such an event or even left our borough of the Bronx. The days leading up to it were filled with questions, anticipation, and excitement.

We got to travel to the iconic Lincoln Center and see one of the best Circus performances on Earth! The students had front row seats so we were right in the action. The students even got to touch some of the animals in the ring.

Each year I teach a unit on New York City and it was so helpful to have the students get to see Lincoln Center and the Big Apple Circus. It was such an exciting and eye opening experience for them and I know they will never forget it. We have never had the opportunity to go on a field trip like this before and we only have you to thank. I couldn't have done it without you.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. K.

  • Listen and Learn

    Funded Oct 24, 2014

I want to start off by thanking you again for your incredible generosity. It is truly amazing to have such great support for my classroom and students. They say it takes a village to raise a child and I feel that that is true. I couldn't do my job without the assistance of this community.

The students were overjoyed upon receiving our materials in the mail. For some of my students who struggle with reading, the listening center has been life changing. They are now able to independently read like their peers using the head phones and audio books. This has helped immensely with their word recognition and reading comprehension skills.

These stories are fun and engaging and accessible to my students. They are excited to read not just because the stories are fun, but because they are able to read on their own. Many of the readers are not too hard, not too easy, but just right for my little learners. Your donations have helped turn my students into life long, confident readers. This holiday season I am thankful for all of you, the members of our "village".”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. K.

The students were overjoyed upon receiving our materials in the mail. Within minutes, the students began reading the books. Many of them borrow the books to take home in their book "baggies" so that they can read at home where they do not have the luxury of books.

My little learners are spirited young children with tons of energy. The class loves to read and listen to stories. Their favorite kind of reading though is the kind that they can do all on their own. It makes them so happy to be able to read a story without any help, and they are getting good! All of my students have special needs and qualify for free lunch. Most of the students can not afford technology in their homes. The students love reading on the computer through different websites, but we only have one computer in the classroom and no other technology. They are very diverse in learning style and academic level which makes the tough job of teaching even tougher!
