My students need books to help them find a love of reading. Many of my students are far below grade level and struggle reading books written for their grade. When they do find books that they can comprehend independently, they are usually not of interest to my students because they're written for much younger grades. If I'm able to diversify my classroom library and obtain new books handpicked for my students, I'm hoping that they will be more inclined to read at home and throughout the school day when appropriate. Additionally, I'd love to read novels as a class outside of our normal 6th-grade curriculum. The novels that I've chosen are classics and relatable to my students through their discussion of social issues and growing up. If my students are given the opportunity to read more independently and through guided reading discussions I know that their reading levels will increase, giving them more motivation and higher self-esteem throughout their school careers and lives.
