The community around the school would be characterized as an under-served area with high poverty. I am a new teacher, and this is my first classroom. I have only been in the classroom for two days. I can already tell that the students are eager readers. They will often ask for more time to read independently once they have found a book they enjoy. At this time I only have about 50 books that a class of about 30 have to share. That means that there is a little over 1 book per child.
