My students are socio-economically disadvantaged English language learners from a rough gang neighborhood in CA. They are young men and women who come from broken homes, some live with other relatives because parents are deported or in jail. They are trying to provide a better life for themselves, their family, and their community. Our school is K-8 charter with a student body of 315, 98% of whom are Hispanic/Latino. My students want to be engineers. They enjoy hands-on projects. They are visual learners who for too long have been hammered with a traditional style and I want to develop their 21st Century learning skills.
