JDHS' DIY Aquaponics Classroom Garden

Funded Apr 1, 2023

This project has peeked interest in our students so that they are more interested in learning about hydroponics. Axl, our pet axelotl has been quite the mascot of our school since he is like a real life water dragon and our school's mascot is the dragon. Axl is the favorite classroom stop on our middle school tours of our school and since he's been here, it's been a great draw for prospective families to see the completely student led animal husbandry project and opens possibilities for middle school students to see this project alive and well as an example of how our school's culture and climate is such that when students have ideas about new projects and learning, the teachers and admin pave the way so that student dreams get realized. Here are some pics & vids from our Axelotl project. Here are some pics of our documenting the tank and associated field trip seining local estuary species so our students can further understand the importance of keeping water clean for water species: https://photos.app.goo.gl/7ov6qfigaM1n9msv5

The original student who wrote this donorschoose grant-Russel is now in college and frequently returns to check on Axl and the status of Josiah who was Russel's succession plan in taking care of the animal. Josiah is now working out a new succession plan as he is heading to college to study veterinarian science.”

With gratitude,
