Our school is a low economic urban school with a high population of English language learners. 99% of our school population receives free lunches. There are 12 different languages spoken in our school. My classroom consists of 24 amazing first graders. They are amazing because they have overcome many challenges and have grown so much in the last year. 23 of the 24 students are considered English Language Learners. 5 of my students are considered newcomers to the United States and 10 of the students are considered beginning English speakers. 12 of my students emigrated here from Asian countries, escaping dangerous and harsh conditions. Many of them are experiencing their first school experience and English experience. They are the hardest workers that I have ever seen. Their determination and dedication is something we should all strive towards.
