Expanding the Canon: Diversifying the American Literature Curriculum
Funded Nov 22, 2017Because of your generous contribution, my students are now reading All American Boys in my class. We are about halfway through the novel, and students are absolutely loving it!
One student in particular, who is a reluctant reader, has come into class every day anxious to start reading and discussing. When I asked him why he liked this novel so much, he explained that "this is the first book I've read in school that is so realistic." He went on to explain that the experiences of the protagonist are similar to experiences he has had.
This novel has allowed for my classroom to be a safe space where students can talk about issues of race and injustice. As the characters in the novel brainstorm ways to create change, we have also talked about positive actions we can take to make a difference. Thank you again for allowing this vision to become a reality!”

Bullet Journaling Club
Funded Dec 2, 2016Since your generous donation, the Bullet Journal Club has been meeting on a biweekly basis. After the first three introductory meetings, students were finally given the supplies that you helped buy! They were all so incredibly excited to use their new journal and calligraphy pen. I watched as each of them went through the empty pages of the journal with smiles on their faces and (hopefully) many ideas in their minds on how to fill it. Immediately afterward, they began decorating and personalizing their bullet journals.
Since then, students have been using their journals for both organizational and creative purposes. Some of the students use it purely to keep track of their homework, while others use it for everything ranging from habit trackers to diary to doodles. Regardless of how they use, every student that received a journal has expressed how much value it has added to their lives. For one student, it provides the opportunity to "help [her] keep on task." For another, it "keeps [her] aware of [her] priorities." When one student dramatically exclaimed that his "life is no longer a mess," all the students seemed to echo this sentiment.
All of the students that received journals are still active members in the club; in fact, there seems to be more members coming to the club meetings each week! Now that all of the students have their journals and pens, the next steps will be to fundraise for more supplies so that they will be able to express themselves even more creatively through their journals. We all can't wait to continue to share our ideas and work on our bullet journals. Thank you!”
