Reading has the power to change lives and open doors. Unfortunately, most of my students see it as a necessary evil that is forced upon them because the books that are at their disposal are, as they like to say, "BORING!" If I am able to expand my classroom library, I will be able to change this perception and watch my students’ eyes widen with excitement as they pick up a new book and discover the joy of reading. The problem is that I do not have enough books in my library at the moment. Many of my books are tattered and worn, published years or even decades ago. They do not represent my students’ interests or experiences. So they sit on the shelves, collecting dust, semester after semester. New books would make all the difference. Each of the books I hope to purchase will captivate my students with characters and a story that connects to their lives. The right text can hook a student, draw him or her into the world of literature, and propel him or her into a lifelong love affair with books. These books have the potential to do just that. With these books, my students will have the opportunity in class to apply new skills and strategies to stories they relate to. They will be able to dialogue with their peers about themes and deeper meanings. They will grow their comprehension and reading levels. But, most importantly, they will be able to grow in their worldview and empathy towards others from the powerful themes contained in these books.
