I am grateful for your contributions to my classroom project. Your generosity will allow me to continue developing empathetic readers and critical thinkers. • We Need High Interest Diverse Books

    Funded Jul 31, 2018

I am truly grateful for your support for my classroom. My students have loved having the opportunity to read all of the new books that have been added to my classroom library.

Every day we spend the first 10 minutes of class reading and our longer period get 30 minutes. Instead of hearing groans when I ask them to take out their books, I am hearing groans when I ask them to put away their books! Students are constantly visiting my bookshelves to find new books to read. I even have students coming from other classes to borrow the books from my shelves!

We have created a culture of readers in my classroom. Students are talking about our books daily; recommending books to each other, their parents, and teachers. In my 7 years of teaching, I have never seen so many students get excited about books. It is amazing what can happen when you put the right book into a students' hand.

Thank you again for your support!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Carlton

My students will be thrilled to know this project has been funded and they will have an opportunity to read these incredible titles. Words cannot express how excited they will be when I share the news with them!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Carlton

"Books are like amusement parks and kids gotta be able to choose the rides." - Kwame Alexander Reading builds vocabulary, empathy, is a medium to freedom and has the ability to connect the reader to the outside world. Independent reading also encourages critical thinking and prepares students for the rigors of college and career. All of these books will be added to my classroom library to create a diverse selection of books so that I can continue to build a culture of reading in my classroom. I want my students to be exposed to literature that mirrors their life experiences and values. Literature that is written BY people who look like them. Literature that is written ABOUT people who look like them. I want them to be able to see themselves and their own life experiences in literature. I also want my students to read literature about people and experiences they know absolutely nothing about. This will help students to see that there are so many different people and experiences in the world!
