The entire class along with myself are so thankful for your donations! You each played an important role in helping to provide my students an unforgettable experience. Every student was engaged and could not take their eyes off Kwame Alexander.
Along with Kwame Alexander was Randy Preston, a professional actor, who plays guitar. The duo sang, rapped, and serenaded the students through the highs and lows of becoming a published author. Kwame informed my students that he was told "no" multiple times when attempting to publish his first book. He never gave up, eventually becoming his own "yes" when he decided to publish his own book.
My students learned to set a goal and to persevere when times get rough. They know that as they continue their journey through life they will take shots/risks. Some they will miss, but if they keep shooting they will eventually make a basket/meet their goal.”

Bringing Kwame Alexander to our school will deepen an appreciation for reading and writing. Kwame Alexander writes in poetry; free verse, patterned, rhymed, rap, haiku, etc. His style and content of writing has sparked a drive in my students to take a chance with writing. Several of my students are often intimidated by books; simply by amount of text on a page, lack of pictures, and size of the book. However, Kwame Alexander demonstrates how to create thought-provoking situations using phrases and a few sentences on a page. Hearing Kwame Alexander speak will encourage my students to take chances and be confident in their ability to write captivating messages. Please help provide my students, and other 4th and 5th grade classes, an experience that will push them to test their boundaries, take chances, and gain confidence in their ability to write. Kwame Alexander has a presence that ignites everyone to try something new with the mentality, "I can do it!" My students have taken ownership of bringing Kwame Alexander to our school by implementing three fundraisers; students have already raised $1,700 of the $2,500 we need. We would appreciate any donation you can give to help us reach our goal.
