  • Learning How to Manage Big Feelings

    Funded Aug 29, 2022

I want to personally thank you for supporting my classroom and investing in my students. The books that you helped to fund have been extremely helpful in teaching social emotional learning skills.

We start each school day with a focused time of approximately 20 minutes for social emotional learning. I have been choosing a book a week for a read aloud that targets our skill for the week. We have been able to learn about accepting responsibility for our actions, being honest, how to be a friend, and how to identify our feelings. Students are listening to the books and having impactful conversations about the stories and the life skills taught. When students make a poor choice, we are able to relate it back to our focus book and talk about what a better choice would have been.

Your generosity has made this learning possible. Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Johns

  • STEM Tools for Learning Success

    Funded Dec 3, 2019

Thank you so much for contributing to my classroom project! The students were so excited when we received our new materials. They couldn't wait for the opprotunity to play, explore and build!

We are using the resources in a variety of ways. The Lite Brites have become a favorite tool to use for building and practicing sight words. We have used the various other items to complete stem challenges, build, and practice working and playing together to solve problems. A class favorite activity was building a house that could withstand the "wolf blowing it down" in our 3 Little Pigs reading and stem unit. The students were so creative!

They also love when they have the opprotunity to free play with the toys on days when it is too cold to go outside for recess.

Your generosity has truly made my classroom a better place!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Johns

  • Tools For Word Work Practice

    Funded Nov 3, 2018

Thank you so much for funding my project! My students were so excited when we received our Etch-a-Sketch boards and Magna Doodles. They love using these tools to practice their sight words. They are also fun alternatives for recess and free time. Students who are reluctant to write will practice their words using these materials. They are having so much fun and they do not even realize they are learning in the process! The Etch-A-Sketch boards are also a great tool to teach children how to problem solve! They have to think and plan how they are going to make the word. I truly appreciate your support! You have made a difference in my classroom. Thank you for investing in my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Johns

  • Scholastic News

    Funded Aug 10, 2015

Thank you so much for supporting my classroom! The students love our subscription to Scholastic News! They are so excited every week when they get to read a new issue. Scholastic News fits perfectly with our science and social studies curriculum. We get to read nonfiction texts on a first grade level with easy to understand vocabulary. This is perfect for my students who are English language learners. Scholastic News also has short videos to accompany each issue. These videos help build background knowledge and get my students excited about what they are going to be learning. Through Scholastic News, I have also been able to introduce my students to important nonfiction text features and teach them how to read and understand nonfiction texts. Parents have shared with me how much they appreciate their child bringing home the weekly issue to read with their family and share with their family what they are learning about in school. I look forward to continuing to use Scholastic news in my classroom to enhance my student's learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Johns

I teach first grade in a low income district. Half of my students are English Language Learners. Due to overcrowding in my school, my classroom is outside in a trailer. We sit at tables to encourage cooperative learning and language practice. My students try hard and are eager to learn. At the beginning of the year, the English language learners are very quiet and shy. By January, they have blossomed and are excited to talk and participate in class activities. My English speaking students are so helpful and accepting of their classmates' differences. My favorite quote for my classroom is by Horton from Dr. Seuss. "A person is a person no matter how small." I try remember this everyday and instill it in my students.
