  • Because if Gayle Forman Tells You to Read, You Read

    Funded Oct 7, 2014

I wish you could have seen the looks on my students' faces when I carried the giant stack of Gayle Forman books to the front of the room. I kid you not -- they were blown away. "Oooh, I read the first one of her books -- she has more!?" "I saw that movie! I want that book!" These were some typical responses.

So from my teenage students and I, a big ol' hearty Michigan thank you! Because of you, I have more kids than ever who are on the cusp of becoming people with authentic reading lives. You are impacting lives in our town!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Stuart

  • We Need These A-Maze-ing Novels!

    Funded Sep 18, 2014

I'm 100% blown away by your generosity and how much energy and life it has breathed into my classroom. With the Maze Runner movie currently being in theaters, the timing couldn't be more perfect. Every single copy of Maze Runner is checked out, and multiple copies of the other books in the series are also in students' hands.

Were it not for your donation, this kind of frenzy would be impossible. One student at a time would be reading Maze Runner, and, several months from now, those who got on the waiting list during the height of the excitement would no longer remember ever having wanted to read the book.

So in short, THANK YOU for helping my students get addicted to reading!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Stuart

  • Make my Classroom a Place Where Lifelong Readers are Born!

    Funded Sep 9, 2014

The series of books you have donated to my classroom is one that gets at least a student or two addicted to reading -- every single here. However, thanks to your donation of multiple copies of each book in the series, something powerful is possible -- multiple kids can get into (or re-enter) the series at any given time.

Book traffic jams, those nefarious gaps in a student's series reading experience, are going to be a thing of the past for the Escape from Furnace series -- and I owe that, and my students owe that, to you.

Thank you for making reading a more addicting, life-giving practice in my classroom, both this year and in years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Stuart

  • Books that Make Teens Want to Dominate Life

    Funded Aug 25, 2014

There is something awesome about giving kids access to a wide variety of books. Whether my students come from text-poor homes or homes overflowing with books, one thing is certain: thanks to you, they spend a hour a day in at least one book-rich, reading-is-essential environment.

Your donation of the Do Hard Things books has already created a buzz in my classroom. I've watched students pick up the books, reading the backs, deciding if they're up for the challenge of reading about such big topics.

Thanks to your donation, there will no longer be a bottleneck when it comes to checking these books out from my classroom library; I'll always have at least a couple copies on hand. Who knows how access to this book will change my students' lives, both this year and in years to come!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Stuart

  • Can a Maus Change Student Lives? This One Can!

    Funded Aug 23, 2014

When my students first saw the Maus books, some were delighted (yes! graphic novels!) while some were not impressed (c'mon, Mr. Stuart -- comic books? really?). This was exactly as I expected and hoped -- the books you gave our classroom defy one's first impression of them, and I asked for your donations with them because I knew the the Art Spiegelman's approach to the holocaust would help my students to really engage with the themes of this horrific chapter in history.

The neat thing is, some of those skeptical students have already started reading Maus -- they just couldn't help themselves when I shared about how this graphic novel has earned the Pulitzer Prize and is taught in more than a few college courses.

Thanks to your donation, there will no longer be a bottleneck when it comes to checking Maus out from my classroom library -- and who knows how access to this book will change my students' lives, both this year and in years to come!”
