With schools placing more and more emphasis on student safety, it has become necessary for classrooms to have certified flame retardant rugs. In the past I have purchased rugs for my classroom on my own, but the requirement of a flame retardant rug falls outside of a reasonable teacher budget. When we were told rugs had to be flame retardant, with my students' safety in mind, I took my rug out of my classroom. What resulted was a cold, empty feeling in the classroom. At the beginning of the following year, when I was trying to build relationships with my new students they did not want to leave their seats to sit on the cold, hard floor. They even asked "Where is your rug?" A rug is more than a rug in an elementary classroom. The classroom rug is the place where students meet in the morning and learn social skills that they will build on for the rest of their lives. The classroom rug is the place where students share with their peers, connect with their teachers, and build the class family environment that they will spend much of their time in for a whole year. With a high special education population, alternative seating is also a concern. Many of my students need to have the opportunity to get out of their seats and work somewhere else in the classroom. My students would love to have the opportunity to work in a small group on a rug, where they can focus on the task at hand, rather than how uncomfortable they are. For me and my students, a rug is so much more than just a rug.
