  • Sensory Breaks for Kids

    Funded Jul 17, 2019

Our students are greatly impacted by the items we were able to purchase due to your generous donations. The students are able to take breaks and they are encouraged to work harder for breaks because they are so excited to try the new sensory items. Students are using better social skills by taking turns, asking for turns, and verbalizing wants more to each other and adults.

When our materials arrived the students had so much fun opening packages and exploring them together. We were also able to practice our fine motor skill when opening packages and sensory items for all students.

We are so thankful for your donations and for the positive impact they have on each and every students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. DarBy

  • Enhance to Learn

    Funded Aug 22, 2018

The impact has been amazing from this project. The kids have enjoyed every aspect of items donated and we are incorporating them into our daily schedule.

We have been able to use instruments in our daily routine to add excitement and learning to our music time. Students are able to choose an instruments for playing with our calendar music. They play along with the beat and often dance creating more engagement and learning of calendar concepts (months, day, counting). Students also use instruments for free time and create songs on the keyboard, play along with favorite music, and even make up their on beats with the drum.

Our sensory items have made a huge difference in our calming and focus. Students are able to go into the sensory room and they love the look and the feel of the curtains. They are able to run their hands through the curtains and enjoy how it feels along with the shimmer from the lighting attracting them. The spin disc has been a favorite in using for free time and sensory time to help relieve stress and gain focus. One student will even spin and read her sight words! Our balance board is helping some of the students with low tone to balance and others are using it to learn some coordination.

We plan to keep incorporating more ways to use our new materials. Students are really enjoying the materials and laughing everyday!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. DarBy

  • Sensory Overload

    Funded Aug 15, 2017

The sensory items purchased in the classroom have been life changing for the students. Students are able to take sensory breaks to relax and re-focus in order to complete academics and to function in the classroom with their peers.

The bubble lamp is a favorite among all the students. They love the lights, the hum of the water, and the fish swimming in the lamp. Many students will ask to go sit and see fish in order to calm down, to take a break, or just to relax for a few minutes before a new activity. The swing allows for multiple different sensory releases and the students are learning turn taking in using the swing along with having sensory relief. Our sensory bins of rice, beans, water beads, and kinetic sand are used daily for fine motor development along with the relaxation they provide for each student.”

  • Moving While Learning!

    Funded Jul 17, 2017

We have had a great year and the new seating has helped greatly. The kids love choosing seats and being able to wiggle! We have students asking to rest and change seats. Thank you so much for all you gave! One student who uses a wheelchair has three seating options for his work space. We have a very small child who is able to use a balance seat to wiggle and to work on her stability all at the same time! We have several students with Autism that love the chairs that hug them tight and provide some sensory relief. The ball seats are loved by all students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. DarBy

Students often struggle to sit at a desk and learn, especially when they have unique learning needs. Students often enjoy working on the floor, with a lap desk, or even wiggling around while they are learning. A seating option may seem like a small part of learning, but it is a very integral part of being able to learn and focus. Some wheel chair bound students have very limited opportunities to sit outside of his/her wheelchair, optional seating gives them more space to move and to fit in with their peers. A choice in seating often empowers the student to make a decision and then get to the task at hand. All students need choices, and this is one small way that these amazing students can make a choice to learn!
