  • Teacher Made Resources for Deaf High Schoolers

    Funded Jul 11, 2025

THANK YOU SO MUCH for your kind donation of Teachers Pay Teachers gift cards. These are incredibly helpful as I plan and set up my classes for the upcoming school year, as I have students with many different academic and IEP needs. This year is shaping up to be amazing!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Daphne Werner

  • More Books, They Said!

    Funded May 9, 2025

We are so excited to get more of the books we're asking for! Thank you for supporting our access to exciting books of all genres. Our teacher is hoping to make us want to be lifelong readers and learners. These books will help to support that mission! Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Daphne Werner

  • Deaf High School Students Are Asking for New Books!

    Funded Apr 9, 2025

Thank you so much for your donation to my classroom book collection request! My students are going to be so excited to see their "wish list" books suddenly appear in my classroom.

In a perfect world, all of my students would have access to all the books they want, at any time - but with your help, I can give them the next best thing, a well-stocked bookshelf.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Daphne Werner

  • Books Deaf Teens Want to Read!

    Funded Oct 3, 2024

As the packages of books started coming in, the anticipation was almost too much for my students to handle! (I'm a little mean. I didn't let them start unpacking until all the packages had arrived.)

Their enthusiasm for "unboxing" the new arrivals was overwhelming. Then, when the books were unpacked, labeled/stamped and put out for the students to begin enjoying, they were racing to beat each other to check the books out!

I'm so lucky. I know that other teachers can only DREAM of this much excitement around reading. I can't take all the credit though - thanks to donors like you, I am able to have a classroom book collection that caters to all of my students' interests!

    Thank you!”

  • Beginning of the School Year Loot!

    Funded Aug 10, 2024

If only you could meet my students, so that they could tell you directly how much of an impact you've made on their learning experience. With your donations toward teacher-designed differentiated instructional materials, toward books and other classroom supplies, toward, essentially, a teacher who can focus on them rather than "administrivia" - you've made a definite, visible, difference in students' lives.

In my classroom, Donors Choose donors are considered "fairy godparents" who contribute to their education just because you care about them. This really means a lot to them, and to me! Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Daphne Werner

  • Books to Beat the Winter Blahs!

    Funded Feb 26, 2024

Thank you for your donation to our "Books to Beat the Winter Blahs" project! These books truly were a welcome surprise for the class; the students were excited to help me unpack the boxes and admire our new books! Many of the books and/or series were specifically requested by students, and they were proud to see how well received their recommendations were!

With your donation, our class (and school) fell that much deeper into "book culture" - so exciting! Books truly are an escape from the cold and dreary winter weather, and our class enjoyed reading our new arrivals. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Daphne Werner

  • Books With Characters Like Us!

    Funded Nov 27, 2023

Thank you so VERY much for your donation toward our "Books with Characters Like Us" project! Most of the books were written BY deaf/hard of hearing authors, or ABOUT deaf/hard of hearing characters, as well as characters with other challenges.

Let me tell you right now: my "Deaf Topics" book shelf is becoming a hot commodity, not just among all of my students, but in particular, among our newcomer students - students who are new to DSD after mainstreaming all of their lives. It is so gratifying to see them engage with these books, and start to identify with the characters, then say things like "I always thought it was just me. Now I realize it's not..."

WOW. Just wow. Thank you for helping to make that happen. Your donations really do matter!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Daphne Werner

  • STEAM Books For Deaf Teens' Choice Reading

    Funded Dec 5, 2023

Thank you so very much for your generous donation towards our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math) Book request project!

Our high school department has students with a very wide range of interests, and when I was told "Geez, you need more non-fiction books with the topics we are interested in! Not all of us like to read fiction," I just knew that DonorsChoose would have my back! The books you bought for my class are already some of the new favorites among the students, and that makes me very happy!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Daphne Werner

  • Fill In Our Book Series Gaps!

    Funded Oct 2, 2023

Goodness gracious, I could not even get my Amazon boxes unpacked without the students dying to get inside and run off with the new book arrivals! They were SO excited to get their hands on the books, all of which were either the "missing" books in a series, or the NEXT books in a series.

Out of all the times I have received book donations from DonorsChoose, I think this time may have been the most eagerly anticipated arrival of books. I'm excited that they're excited, and I'm excited to have donors like you that support us!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Daphne Werner

  • Award Winning Books for Deaf Teens!

    Funded Sep 8, 2023

Thank you for funding my "Award Winning Books for Deaf Teens" project! I hand-picked books that would interest, appeal to, and/or reflect the students in my classes. So, it was so much fun to then watch as they swarmed the book displays and picked out the books they most wanted to read.

Donors, those are the moments I live for as a language arts teacher. When a reluctant reader picks up a book and says, "Now, this, I would read," or when a "bookivore" picks up a text and shouts, "I've been waiting for this one!"

    Best. Feeling. Ever.

    Thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Daphne Werner

Research shows that the *number one* way to improve one's reading skills is .... to read! When students - regardless of their age/gender/socioeconomic status/disability status -read a wide range of texts, they are far more likely to demonstrate growth in all academic areas. It is critical for classroom libraries to offer a varied selection of texts for students to choose from and read on their own time. When students have choices, they are more likely to find a book that they WANT to read - and ENJOY reading. My goal is to stock my classroom library with a range of texts, to hook all of my students into reading - even the reluctant or self-proclaimed "non-readers."
