Research shows that students with Autism benefit from a minimum of 15-20 minutes of vigorous physical activity. Vigorous requires the heart rate to be increased to a certain level above at rest heart rate depending on cardiac concerns of the student. These benefits include decreased stimulatory behaviors and increased attention and focus to task in the classroom. HR and autonomic responses are also being researched as a way to potentially predict meltdown type behaviors which are common in the students that I work with daily. By providing our students with Fitbits they can be educated on what is a healthy level of fitness, learn to set goals and achieve them. They also can monitor their heart rate. For students who are not ready to self regulate the monitoring can be used as a tool to help staff be aware of potential crisis movements and try to deescalate them. These skills with help them become more independent as well as help parents and care givers .
