Microscopes are a large part of 5th and 6th grade science. In the 5th grade, students begin to learn about different scientific discoveries and advances that each new development brings to technology and human knowledge. The microscope is one of the advancements that the students begin to learn about. They will take a closer look at who who created them and why and how. Following the discovery, they learn about the microscope itself including learning the names of the different parts and how to handle them. Then they move onto using them and looking at different items under the microscope to enhance their observation skills.
In 6th grade, the students use the microscope to look at the smallest life forms that are able to be seen only with the use of microscopes.
Robert Hooke, one of the creators of the microscope, said, "By the help of microscopes, there is nothing so small, as to escape our inquiry; hence there is a new visible world discovered to the understanding."
Microscopes like those I am requesting can be used in every unit that we will cover throughout the year, and they will be used to enhance our understanding of the world around us. I know that when the students get to use the microscopes, they light up. When they are able to see little creatures swimming around under the lens, they are in awe. When we begin to look at cells from inside our mouths, they are captivated that something so small can be what creates all life.
The discoveries made by using microscopes lead to questions, and students that question life and everything around them are one of the main goals of teaching.
