Animals Scat-ered & Printed
Funded Dec 24, 2016As teacher and students, we are overwhelmed with your generosity. Since receiving the materials, we have begun our preparations for the Envirothon Competition we participate in each year. This year we have two separate groups that are competing and these added resources have already been put to use identifying plants, animals, skulls, and scat. We are very excited as a group and are ready to give our best at the competition. All of the extra identification books that we got this year, have now been split into two groups. They are also working together with the prints and scat. I feel that we have started off really well.
It was fun for me to watch their reactions yesterday when I pulled out all of these materials during our practice. They were astounded that so much was given to us. We have got several trips planned, around the area, to utilize the monocular and aquatic invertebrate equipment. This will help me to teach them about identification of many species of animals from a safe distance. It also allows us to learn, without scaring them away. With the help of amazing donors like you, the sky is the limit.
Thank you!”

Science Microstyle
Funded Dec 7, 2016Technology is starting to become more prevalent in schools around the world. Students understand technology and by using it in schools we are quicker to understand information and do projects more efficiently. The iPad we have gotten is going to help us study both macro and microorganisms in many ways. We have an attachable microscope to use with it and we can also use it for pictures, videos, and easy access to research.
Having the ability to use this iPad is fantastic because the microscope is portable and most students are more familiar with the operation of an iPad than with microscopes. Microscopes also are not very efficient when going into the field. As students we already know how to use iPads and other electronics. Though we understand and can use microscopes, many of the the things we will be studying will be dead before we got to a lab. Thus there is more time spent on actually studying the microorganisms.
So far, we have been able used the iPad for pictures. However, we have not yet been able to use the microscope because of the weather. Our area is covered in snow and we want to go out in the actual environment to study organisms instead of just using samples we already have on hand.”

Our Turn to Shine
Funded Mar 9, 2016Thank you for your donations. We never expected to have an opportunity like this during this year. Your donation allowed us to obtain valuable learning to prepare for a competition. Through this competition, we learned and exercised multiple life skills. These include: camaraderie, leadership, and communication.
In preparation for our competition, we used the identification booklets in order to be prepared for a test on wildlife, aquatic invertebrates, invasive species, forestry, and soils. We took some time during our spring break in order to take samples and identify different aquatic invertebrates and learn about turbidity. This along with other resources enabled us to better understand the materials we used during the competition. With the use of these materials, we did extremely well for a rookie team.
We learned about different invasive species and how influential they are in our communities. We learned how important it is to have good study habits. We got the opportunity to learn about different raptor species and how they are rescued. We learned how certain species affect others very directly. Also, we learned how feral cats affect some many other species negatively if they are not regulated.”
