Yoga & Mindfulness Tools for High Schoolers

Funded Aug 16, 2021

Thank you for your donations to help supply the dance students of John Dewey High School with new mindfulness materials and props. Your donations have helped us out immensely within our growing mindfulness programs and helped to incorporate body awareness into my students' dance curriculum. This year, with your wonderful donations, my high school students have used the yoga mats and blocks for weekly yoga classes, both in our classroom and on our campus' spacious front lawn. In my classes, students are not just learning to dance, but they are learning to have body awareness and emotional self-regulation. The additional props that were donated included yoga wheels and foam rollers which my students use in between classes, rehearsals, and even their sporting events.

My students (as well as our mindfulness staff) were incredibly excited to receive these materials. With our growing programs, we needed more mats, but now with the yoga blocks, we can offer more classes, differentiate asanas (or yoga poses) to our varied populations of students, and give students the opportunity to learn more restorative yoga curriculum, not just vinyasa flow.

Currently, my students use the props at least twice a week for yoga, body conditioning, and mindfulness classwork. Students also use the materials in our mindfulness room, which is open to all students during their lunch periods. The additional props are always available to my students who need them during classes, especially the foam rollers and yoga wheels. Throughout the spring semester, I hope to have the students design their own mindfulness practice that they can incorporate into their daily lives in and out of the classroom.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Fisher
