Relevant Non-Fiction For My AP English Students
Funded Mar 7, 2013Thank you for your generous donation. Your kindness and compassion gave my AP English Language and Composition students two amazing reading experiences. These books forced them to think critically and push beyond the surface of the text. I wish I could show you some of their amazing papers that were written in response to each title!
Best of all, they truly enjoyed the books. It was such a treat watching them puzzle through some of the logic and evidence in 'Freakonomics,' and our class discussions were always lively and rich in debate. To say they LOVED 'In Cold Blood' is an understatement. Several have already told me it's now their favorite book. It's been fun watching them wrestle with feeling sympathy for the cold blooded killers that Capote characterizes with such detail and depth.
In a time where our culture seems to be doing everything it can to stifle public education and reduce it to its most base form, I am so happy to count you as supporters of urban students. Your donation proves that not everyone accepts the status quo of underperforming, inner city schools.
Thanks for believing in my students!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Lee
Show 'Em the Words: A Doc Cam to Ignite The Writing Process
Funded Aug 10, 2012Thank you so much for your generous gift toward the purchase our document camera. To say it has been a God-send is an understatement. I use it every day, and it always saves me time and energy! I have almost eliminated copies in my classes; this saves paper AND helps keep the students engaged as they love to work with the doc cam. (They named it DOCtor CAMbellini!)
I have been able to share much more text with them - student work, magazine articles, exemplar essays, even artwork! Student engagement is up, and I have seen improvement in their writing ability and vocabulary usage. I know this is in part due to the lessons I've given them using "Doctor Cambellini."
Thank you again for your gift. Not only have you impacted my classroom and my students, but you've reminded me there ARE thoughtful, intentional, generous people who do truly care about public education in our country. Knowing I'm not alone in this battle is its own rich gift, and I thank you for that.
Your selflessness is inspiring.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Lee
