An independent work box station is one of my dream activities for my students. As a teacher, it's amazing to watch them grow more and more independent, and begin to work on these tasks all by themselves. I want to create structured work boxes designed to help my children with a variety of disabilities learn attention, behavioral, and independent work skills through the use of shoebox tasks. These tasks allow a student to practice working independently without teacher support. The work box tasks can start out as very easy tasks such as putting the correct number of items into a cup, and then move up to much harder skills, depending on the abilities of the child. Each work box task needs be hands on and creative to keep the students attention so I will need lots of laminating film, velcro and comfortable seating. The goal is to provide opportunities for students to learn how to pay attention, behave appropriately and finish work independently. In addition, work box tasks are also a great way to have students independently work on IEP goals and provide additional drill and practice while they work on developing independent work skills.
