Decoding is the ability to apply knowledge of letter-sound relationships, including knowledge of letter patterns, to correctly pronounce written words. Understanding these relationships gives students the ability to recognize words quickly and to figure out words they haven't seen before. Although some students figure out some of these relationships on their own, my students benefit greatly from explicit phonics instruction. The Hooked On Phonics Learn to Read program is a step-by-step approach, where kids learn about letters and sounds, learn how to put them together to form words, and then utilize these skills to read great stories and books. While my students have a will and a desire to read like their peers, they do not yet have a curriculum that meets their needs and learning style. By having a curriculum that is designed to teach in such an explicit way, I believe my students will gain not only the ability to read functionally, but will also acquire a love of reading that will encourage them to be life long readers and learners. I believe the Hooked On Phonics Learn To Read program can really be a great tool for my struggling students.
