My students are a rambunctious, clever, highly motivated group of 3rd through 5th graders with autism. They attend school in a specialized public school district specifically for students with the most significant special needs. All of my students have communication difficulties and trouble focusing for extended periods of time. Because of these difficulties I often adapt grade level books (Harry Potter, Charlotte's Web, Holes, The Magic Tree House, etc) to include interactive features on our class SmartBoard and meet my students' reading level.
My class is very interested in and engaged by technology. With affordable tablets, each student can have these adapted books pushed to them directly during whole group and individualized instruction. This will not only increase their engagement, but will also help me track their reading comprehension and the areas I need to focus on during small group work.
