  • Storage to Help My Writers Make Room for New Ideas

    Funded Apr 14, 2018

Unbelievable! THANK YOU! I'm elated to tell you that your gift, along with the gifts from others, has completely funded this project!! I already have the perfect place for the bookcases and am looking forward to seeing them filled with student work and books. These beautiful pieces will be constant reminders to my students that there's a greater community who believes in them and are willing to make sacrifices for their success. Thank you for giving to our classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. F.

  • Book Set & Biographies Inspire Students to Be Difference Makers

    Funded Jan 5, 2018

We have gotten so much use out of the resources you gave us! You would be so pleased with the special care the kids show the magazines and books. They are couldn't be more proud of your gifts.

When we use the Scholastic Scope stories, they are more interested than typical because the texts are relatable and current. Plus, there's just something neat about reading a magazine in school!

The biographies and storybooks have been phenomenal additions to our classroom library. The kids, especially the boys, are drawn to the biographies. It makes my day when they come and tell me new things they learn from the books. I even had one student excited to share with me something he had in common with Martin Luther King Jr.

The picture books you gave us may be the crowd favorites. They are beautifully illustrated and written and are captivating to the kids. They have learned so much about our world and have enjoyed every moment!

You've touched my heart and the hearts of my students. THANK YOU for investing in our class, our school, and our community!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. F.

  • Mustangs Run Toward Literacy With Contemporary African American Novel

    Funded Dec 9, 2017

I wish you could've seen the kids' faces when we unpacked the boxes with your gifts. My students couldn't believe all the amazing things were for them! Initially, I asked for an easel, but when that came damaged and was unavailable for reorder, I chose binders for a classroom set of writing curriculum, 2 sets of dry erase markers, and binder clips. My students have such pride in the books and other supplies provided through this project. It has been wonderful to see their grateful hearts through the care with which they use the resources.

I was recently telling a colleague how soothing corporate reading is for my students. Whether I'm reading or one of their classmates is reading aloud, hearing the written word spoken seems life giving to them. And, because Jason Reynold's "Ghost" is such a high interest novel for them, they seem to relish it even more. They are into the story and ready and excited to share their thoughts and perspectives in classroom conversation. Additionally, they're growing as literary analysts and are able to discuss characterization and themes in ways they haven't before!

The chart paper, binders, and markers have opened up fun activities to pair with the novel. They love moving around the room and using stations to discuss and infer about the story. Whenever I ask who wants to record ideas on the board, hands shoot up. My kids are remembering more of what they're learning because the tools allow them to be hands on and interactive. Plus, even though many are reluctant writers, they are enjoying having the writing binders filled with tools that allow us to connect their reading to their writing. Honestly, I thought the binders would just offer organization, but I've seen an increase in their motivation. I didn't anticipate the binders would also make the process seem more purposeful and authentic to them, but am thrilled they do!

Your financial sacrifice to give us enriching tools for our classroom and your personal words to the kids are both so appreciated. Knowing you believe in them has helped them sit taller and work harder. Thank you also for the belief in me and our school to steward your gifts well. You have been an encouragement to us all!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. F.

"We lose ourselves in books, we find ourselves there too." Most of my students have experienced these far too seldom. Because the majority of my kids struggle with comprehension, vocabulary, and reading, their lexile level is years below their grade level. As a result, they are not comfortable tackling books alone. Few of my students read outside of school or for pleasure, and I would like to see that change. Novel studies are a meaningful way to engage learners, develop critical thinking skills, and increase writing ability while encouraging a love of reading. In a highly monochromatic literary world, Jason Reynolds' 'Ghost' offers my kids characters they will "get" who are going through experiences they will understand. Reading this relatable novel as a class will inspire them to stretch through the process and risk to find other books they connect with. Reynolds' contemporary novel reflects my students and their situations. As a result, I expect this novel will capture my student's hearts as it grows their skills and confidence. Novel studies are filled not only with reading, but also with conversation and hands on activities to meet the needs of all kinds of learners. The easel and paper will be instrumental in producing anchor charts and other visuals as we journey through the novel together.
