Reading to Learn by Learning to Read!
Funded Mar 30, 2023Because of you, we have enjoyed the opportunity to learn many new reading skills and just enjoy the process of reading great books. Being able to work our way through a series has been an awesome privilege. Reading the book "Patina" allowed us to follow some of the characters we had previously been introduced to in the book "Ghost." We are looking forward to learning more about this character growth in the books "Sunny" and "Lu" as well.
We read the books together each day in class, and each time afterwards we had rich, engaging conversations about plot, characters, setting, and narrative techniques that make books so enjoyable. We were able to find commonalities between ourselves and other characters in the books as well.
Once again, many thanks to you all for your considerable donations to our reading class. We can't wait to see what the next books have in store!”
With gratitude,
Mr. Evans

Funded Oct 18, 2017Thank you so much for the contributions of your hard-earned dollars to our classroom library. We are now adding awesome, different subject, high-interest books to our collection. Every day in class we have independent reading time in which scholars read a book of their choice. Once finished we answer questions about the book. Some of the questions include: What is one word to describe a character and your book and why, Which character would you be from your book and why, What is a conflict you have read about in your book, and what is the setting of your book.
These questions, along with others, encourage the reader to think deeply about the text and even show empathy with the characters in the stories they read. Because reading levels in my classroom vary from 2nd grade to 6th grade, we need as many books across various reading levels as we can get!
There are students who came in at the beginning of the year, with strong, negative feelings about reading. I have now watched them develop a love for reading thanks to the donations made to our classroom both present and past. Students are now discovering what genres of books they enjoy reading, and it is great to see them get very excited about new books! Once again, thank you SO, SO much for your donations to our classroom library.”

These questions, as well as others, encourage thew reader to think deeply about the text and sometimes empathize with characters in the stories they read. Because reading levels in my classroom vary from 2nd grade to 6th grade, we need as many books across various reading levels.
There are students who came in at the beginning of the year, wary about reading. I have now watched them develop a love for reading thanks to the donations made to our classroom. Students are now taking to certain types of books, and it is great to see them get very excited about new books! Once again, thank you SO much for your donations to our classroom library.”

Increase Our Reading, Increase Our Potential
Funded Jan 22, 2016Because of you, our classroom now has new books that students are excited about reading. In these books, my students enjoy during reading time and are also able to take them home for reading. Reading in a quiet place is important and some students may not have that opportunity other than at school.
Because of you, my students are able to do work on a sixth grade level that the common core curriculum requires them to do. Work like identifying themes of stories, citing evidence, and describing the plot of stories. My students are now able to do this work in books they enjoy reading, which makes a world of difference.
Because of you, students have been reading through various series of books. Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Raina Telgemeier graphic novels, iFunny series, and Lumberjanes to name a few. It has been wonderful and encouraging to watch students gain a love of reading. Thank you so much for donating to our classroom.”

Mr. Evans
