Mathematics is not a spectator sport! With the supplies I have requested—mini rulers, mini pencil boxes, golf pencils, erasers and glue sticks-- my students will have the tools to put together their interactive mathematics notebooks. They will be taking fairly traditional notes on the right hand side of the notebook and then processing the information or topic on the left hand side. I want students to be creative and independent thinkers. They will use different tools such as Thinking Maps and foldables to actually think about the information in their own language. Combining words with visuals helps the students connect and remember key ideas. This notebook will be a growing portfolio of their learning. An active buy-in during class time! No longer is it enough to memorize formulas and plug through those 100 homework problems. Students must be able to synthesize and use the mathematics concepts to problem solve and analyze. Having the supplies for their interactive notebook will assist them in completing this and increasing their mathematical fluency.
