  • Building World Communities in the Classroom Community

    Funded Aug 22, 2018

Thank you so much for donating to my project Building World Communities in the Classroom. With the money you donated to my project we were able to teach compassion and empathy, motivate students to connect with each other and create an environment for social emotional growth and understanding. In my classroom we use a literacy based approach when introducing new subjects to our students. The connection with text is essential for giving our students strong foundation for becoming independent and confident learners.

These books were paired with our Kindness curriculum which has made a significant impact on learning, classroom environments and relationships within our school community. Our students are more invested in their learning because they are supported by their peers and teachers through mindfulness practices. The classroom environment is one of positive reinforcement and nurturing teaching. The students teach and learn how to be tolerant and respectful to each other and others within our school.

Through social emotional learning our students can demonstrate pro-social behaviors with other children and adults. They can share, take turns, wait patiently, follow rules, and help others within of school community. Our students can notice and use words to describe emotions in themselves and others. He can express feelings, needs, and opinions. They continue to build social skills and relationships. Without your kindness none of this would have been possible. Thank you so much of all you have done on behalf of myself and our classroom community.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Downs

These materials, such as the Learning to Get Along Book Set, will help ease my students' transition into the academic world. I will be able to teach my students empathy, mindfulness, and the socials skills that are necessary for their social emotional and academic success. Our students need to be able to recognize and understand their emotions in order to navigate successfully through their relationships with their families, peers, and teachers. They will be able to work out their own conflicts by having the tools to recognize the emotions in others and seek peaceful resolutions to their own issues. These books will also help use to build more inclusive, peaceful, and community driven classroom environments.
