The Art of Cursive Writing!
Funded Feb 9, 2022Thank you so much for your generous donations. WoW! We finally have cursive writing books for the students. The students and teachers were so excited to receive the cursive writing books. I created the project in order to assist the upper grades in my school. When I went into the first fifth grade class to give the teacher the cursive writing books, the teacher said, " just yesterday the students were asking me when we were going to learn cursive writing!". The books arrived just in time. I was able to share 60 workbooks with the two fifth grade classes and one fourth grade class. The students began to use them the following day!
I created a second "Art of Cursive Writing"project in order to receive another 60 cursive writing books so that the remaining fourth graders and third graders get the opportunity to learn cursive writing. Thank you for helping our students.

Funded Dec 31, 2021Thank you so much for your generous donations. When the box of graphic novels arrived, I was so excited. I explored the titles with another teacher.
We passed along the books to the students. They were very excited with the graphic novels. They are colorful , fun and original. The students immediately picked up the books. It did not feel like a chore. It was for pleasure.
The books were added to the after school program literacy program. Now, the students have a large selection of books to choose from. What a pleasure!
As well, there are multiple copies of some of the titles. We can create mini book clubs. The students can read the texts at the same time & then discuss together.”

Funded Dec 30, 2021It was such a pleasure to share the boxes of the scholastic books with the after school teachers and their students. First of all, the students were very excited to have such a wonderful selection of new books. The students were happy to have the opportunity to choose a book to take and read at home.
Some children choose books to read in class. DEAR: drop everything and read.
As teachers, we try to encourage children to read for pleasure. When they have choices, it is easier for them to realize that reading is not a chore.
Thank you for bringing books to the hands of our young readers. They have been through so much this year. Thanks for being part of the Donors Choose Community and making a difference.”

Funded Dec 28, 2021Thank you so much for your generous donations. With your help our after school students are spending time playing board games. I am thrilled that we can put our electronic devices aside for a while and begin to return to normalcy. We can not turn the clock back. But we are trying to help the students socialize and interact with other students by playing board games. The other day, I began playing bananagrams, a word game with one student who did not have homework. While playing with her, she began to learn. I was explaining the game to her.... I said, this game is like scrabble, since it has letter tiles and you make words. Sadly, she never heard of scrabble. Then, I said, we use the tiles to make words, like a cross word puzzle. Again, she had no idea. Little by little other children completed their homework and were excited to see what we were doing. They joined the game. We learned a vocabulary word: simultaneous, just by reading the directions of the game.
I am so excited for the children. I can see their excitement with the games, It is such a pleasure to see them interact with one another and begin to build their wellness and self confidence. Thank you for being part of the Donors Choose Community. You really have contributed to making a huge difference in the lives of these kids. THANK YOU.”

Funded Dec 27, 2021Thank you for your generous donations. I am so excited that we now have new games (without missing pieces). My students participate in an after school program. There was some idle time, after snack time & during the homework time. The students always seem to go to their devices to watch something. These students have had a hard year with Covid. They are lacking with socialization with one another. They need to learn to talk to each other, play with each other, learn rules of new games and to think! They were getting lethargic being glued to the devices.
Today, several students helped me carry the boxed to the after school office. They helped me open the boxes. A boy said to me " thank you so much for buying these games for us". I told him, that donors from around the United States made contributions to him.
We took out 3 games to start slowly introducing them to the students. As you can see, The girls playing SET were engaged. We had a sister and brother team playing RUSH HOUR, while other looked on and waited their turn.
We had a group of boys playing CONNECT 4. Can you see the excitement in their faces? The children were thrilled.
Thank you. With your help, we are on the right path toward wellness. Every day we will introduce other games and let the different groups of children teach one another how to play. I have created another wish list, an additional game project to complement the variety of games that we currently have.
Thank you for being part of the Donors Choose community. We are greatly appreciative.”

Funded Dec 30, 2021Thank you so much for your generous donations. With your help we were able to acquire The Dog Man Series Books. I was excited that the package of books arrived this week. I opened the box and I shared the books with our third grade after school students. I watched the students. Their eyes followed the books into the classroom as I handed the box to the after school teacher. The Dog Man series is very popular. They were so excited to have a set of their own.
We let the students have some DEAR time. (Drop Everything and Read). They immediately choose the Dog Man Books. The pages are colorful and inviting. The books are fun, comical graphic novels that will let reading be fun. These kids are stressed from wearing masks all day long, worrying about the weekly covid testing and having teachers absent due to illness. It is just a pleasure to let them read for pleasure. Thank you for helping us achieve this.”

Funded Apr 7, 2021Thank you so much for supporting my students. With your generous donations, I was able to give each child the book "King of Kindergarten". In my remote classroom, I read to the students two stories a day . I held real paper books (not digital books). I ask them comprehension questions. At the end of the zoom meeting, the children are instructed to answer a key question by drawing a picture to answer the question. I read the stories in a whole group. Later, we meet up in small groups. Each child has a turn to share their illustration, answer the key comprehension questions and just talk about their picture. They love when we are reading together.
When we all have the same quality pieces of literature, I hope that the children will revisit the stories, with a family member.
Right now, the children are transitioning from PRE-K remote, to in person KINDERGARTEN. That is a double change!! Transitions are hard enough in a regular year. As we all know, this was NOT a regular year.
Thank you for putting real paper books into the hands of my students who will be going to Kindergarten in NYC.”

Funded Feb 16, 2021My students were so excited to receive the barn puzzles. The smiles on their faces are amazing!! Every month, we have a new theme. The new theme is Babies. We are studying human babies and animal babies. The farm puzzle will help my remote PRE k students to develop their fine motor skills. The picture in the farm puzzle will help my students learn about farm animals: the mother animals & their babies. We are learning about the different names of baby animals, while building our vocabulary.
We are learning the names of all the baby animals and the places they live.
This school year, We learned about plants growing. Now, we are learning about animals growing. We will end this remote year with learning and reflecting about Transformations. My students are transforming, growing and changing day by day.
Thank you for making this year full of educational surprises for my students.
