  • Yes, We Play Chess!

    Funded Jul 23, 2022

Thank you so much for your generous donations. I am so excited for the children. I can see their excitement with the chess sets. It is such a pleasure to see them interact with one another and learn new skills and develop self confidence while playing. With your help our after fifth grade students are spending time learning and playing chess. I am thrilled that we can put our electronic devices aside for a while and begin to return to normalcy. We can not turn the clock back. But we are trying to help the students socialize and interact with other students by playing board games.

Thank you for being part of the Donors Choose Community. You really have contributed to making a huge difference in the lives of these kids. THANK YOU.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. B

  • Our Calming Corner: A Classroom Basic

    Funded Aug 9, 2022

Thank you so much for your generous donations. With your help, we were able to purchase bean bags chairs. The children were so excited when the bean bags finally arrived and we set up the calming corner.

In September, my students started their first "normal" school year after covid regulations and masks. Now, we are trying to bring normal life to school, yet before we can begin any academics, we need to deal with the social and emotional issues with the children. With the new bean bag chairs, we created a calming area, to deal with our feelings, a place to unwind, relax and deal with our feelings.

Now, a few months into the school year, our students know the routines. They know they can come to the comfy corner to deal with any issues that arise. This has made our students calmer and more able to learn. Thank you for being part of the Donors Choose Community and making it happen.”

  • Art and Wellness

    Funded Jul 25, 2022

Thank you for your generous donations. With your help I can share buckets of clay with my fellow teachers. Children learn by touching. It is very important to bring the ARTS back into the classroom. Clay is a basic classroom supply.

I am so happy to have the opportunity to use clay as extensions to literacy. My students read stories, answer questions and write down answers. Now, they have the opportunity to create the main characters from the story with clay. Or, they are using the clay to make their ideas become 3 dimensional.

The students are using clay with their hands, and talking with their fellow classmates.

Slowly, we are entering the post covid era. It's wonderful to see the students getting opportunities to use arts as part of our daily classroom learning experience.”

  • Don't Bug Out!

    Funded Jul 17, 2022

Thank you for your generous donations & your patience. This project was funded at the end of last school year. I can't wait for the spring! I will be sharing the ladybug kits with some of our new classroom teachers. The teachers are so excited! These urban students will get excited too. I have seen it before. It never gets dull to see children excited with hands on science.

    Children love learning by observing.

The children will love to watch the ladybugsmove, while waiting for changes and transformations to happen. They don't realize what happen. Boy, will they be surprised.

Learning science with insects is perfect for different grades. It gives the students something special to look forward to in the classroom.

Thanks so much for helping us get this project funded.”

  • Chapter Books for Finicky Readers

    Funded May 19, 2022

As you know, reading is the key to success. Our second grade students are slowly recovering from remote learning, due to covid . Some students were remote for 4 months, while others were remote for an additional full school year. Being remote for first grade was a challenge, especially during a critical year for learning how to read. With your help, we were able to put these wonderful second grade chapter books into the hands of our finicky readers. Even though it is toward the end of the school year, the students absolutely benefitted from the books. We didn't "save" the books for the next school year.

The students were super excited to get new interesting books. They even began discussing the books with their classmates. I am so glad that we were able to get a class set for each of our second grade classrooms. Thank you for being part of the Donor Choose Community.”

  • Queen of Kindergarten

    Funded May 6, 2022

Thank you so much for supporting our PREK students. With your generous donations, I was able to give each child the book "King of Kindergarten". It is so important to put quality literature into the hands of children. In June, we are preparing our students for leaving Pre-K and getting them ready for their journey to Kindergarten. We have read the book King of Kindergarten together. Literature is a great way to transition to kindergarten.

Each child will receive a copy of the book. It will be sent home with each student at our MOVING UP ceremony. The ceremony is a ritual to mark the transition from PRE-K to KINDERGARTEN.

Thank you for putting real paper books into the hands of my students who will be going to Kindergarten in NYC.”

  • Mystery Books for Second Graders

    Funded May 9, 2022

Thank you for your generous donations. With your help, we were able to bring new books into the hands of our sweet second graders. At this point in the year, they are excited at the skills they have acquired in reading. They realize that they can actually pick up a book & read for pleasure. It is our job to provide them with a range of age appropriate topics and independent reading level as well as high interest level.

The books that arrived meet all those benchmarks.

Why did I write a project for mystery books? I asked the students what books do they want to read. Which genre should we request? One student suggested more Cam Jansen books. Again, thank you for understanding the importance of books in our classroom. These books will help us through the end of the school year and they will be on our shelves for the Fall of 2022. Thanks for being part of the Donors Choose community.

    Regards from Brooklyn NY.”
