My school is a Title I school and approximately 90% of the students are on free and reduced-price lunch. The following list, although not inclusive, provides one or more factors that many of my students face on a daily basis: homelessness, disabilities, neglect, limited English proficiency, excessive absences, low academic performance, lack of basic supplies for survival, low-income, single-parent home, parents working multiple jobs, older siblings taking on the role of a parent, gang affiliation, and drug involvement. Unfortunately, school takes a back seat to surviving. Furthermore, these students find it impossible to break the chain of events that has occurred to their parents and grandparents. Sadly, they feel destined to a generational curse. Many students find our school as a place of refuge. Our school has a family-oriented atmosphere and we embrace each child that enters our building. My students have a humble, respectful, and willing heart and come eager to learn.
