My students are motivated and driven. They want to succeed. We are a magnet school that was founded on the Paideia philosophy. In simplest terms, this means the students are active participants in their own education. As a magnet school, we attract a diverse population. The students come from all over the city, instead of just one neighborhood. Currently, our middle school population is 41% black, 9% Asian, and 49% white, with 35-40% qualifying for free and reduced lunch. Every day I ask my students to embrace challenges, but they also challenge me in ways I never expected. Anytime we start a unit, I hear: Can we do a project on this? Can we write about this? Can we research this? These are the best challenges for a teacher. I always want to be able to answer with a resounding, YES!
