  • How did my Reading Sound? Take 2

    Funded Nov 26, 2022

Thank you for your generous support. Your support for this project allowed me to purchase additional headsets for students. More students were able to use the latest technology that records and analyzes their reading. They learned which words they struggled with and then received extra support with those words. They read passages multiple times increasing their fluency. The difficult words became automatic, the phrases were read together for meaning, and they used expression to bring the text to life.

Students began asking, "When can I read (enter title of book) again? I want to hear myself get better!"

These headsets motivated my students to work hard! Students developed pride in their reading."”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Crosby-Pitchamootoo

  • Secure, Charge, Learn

    Funded Nov 24, 2022

I (and my back) cannot thank you enough for this laptop charging cart. This cart saved me from having to carry heavy bins of laptops up and down stairs. Instead I am able to wheel them into the elevator to move from classroom to classroom. Most importantly, though, is the fact that they were always charged when my students needed them.

While I provide direct instruction to a small group of students, my other students use laptops to practice their phonics skills and work on reading passages fluently.

They have become independent during this time. When they are finished they automatically return the laptops to the cart and plug them in. Every night I plug in the cart and the next day they are charged and ready for student use!”

    With gratitude,

  • Developing and Celebrating Fluent Reading

    Funded Sep 20, 2022

It made my year when I heard this!

"Ms. Pitchamootoo, can we stay behind and read this one more time?"

Two of my 5th grade students wanted to remain in class instead of going to recess. Students who have experienced years of struggle in school wanted to skip free time to read. They were engaged in repeated reading practice.

The materials purchased from your donations make it possible for the students to engage in a routine of studying difficult words, increasing their word banks, reading repeatedly to develop expression, providing peer support and feedback, and finally recording their fluent reading.”

  • Cozy Seating for More Reading

    Funded Aug 9, 2022

My students love these chairs. They support their back as they engage in lessons on the carpet. It is wonderful to see them interacting with the content in the lesson and eagerly raising their hands to share their thoughts with the assistant interventionist.

Students can select their chair and get comfortable during independent reading. They also delight in caring for their chairs. They wipe them down, flatten them, and stack them to store for the next day. They care for their learning space.

My students love the feeling of success they have when earning points for passing quizzes on the books they read in the library center.”

  • Magic Carpets Will Expand Knowledge

    Funded Aug 4, 2022

When the students entered the classroom and saw the bright colored carpets, they could not wait to sit on them. They immediately began rubbing their hands back and forth along the designs.

The students love picking which continent they will sit on for the day's lesson. Originally, I needed to refer to them by the color as well as the name of the continent. Now they declare, "I want to sit on South America."

Students feel special to be able to enjoy the library nook. The library carpet has created a beautiful space where students read independently, giving me the opportunity to work one-on-one with students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Crosby-Pitchamootoo
