East Union is a middle school in rural, Marshville, NC. 100% of our students receive free breakfasts and lunches. Our school is considered a "restart" school, but has also been called a "turnaround" or "high-needs" school. Approximately 75% of our students are from low-income families. Our demographics are approximately a third African American, a third Hispanic and a third Caucasian. These students face adversity on so many levels. Ideally, I would like for my art class to be a place where they can escape their troubles, even if it's only for 45 minutes a day. Being able to express oneself is crucial at this age. I need to provide the best environment possible to stimulate engagement and spark creativity. Our school is not a typical school, so I do not want a typical classroom, I want a studio. If I change the culture of the classroom, I am confident I can help create many more sparks.
