Scientifically Engaged
Funded May 5, 2020This year has definitely looked different that years in the past. We aren't allowed to do as many hands on activities, and items have to be sanitized between students. Even through all of this, my students were excited to see and use these materials. Several items were used for our weather unit, like the weather maps in the picture. We have also used the simple machine sets for students to create their own simple machines. This set is also great because it comes with STEM challenge cards that my students enjoyed.
Again, thank you for being so generous and supporting my students.”

Funded Apr 14, 2019My students are loving these Jenga blocks! Due to me switching schools this year, students were able to use them at the very end of the last school year and throughout this year.
At the beginning of the school year, we used them as a get to know you activity. Depending on which color the student pulled out of the Jenga stack, that would determine which question they answered about themselves. We've also used the Jenga blocks to review place value, fractions, and decimals so far. As soon as I pull them out, students are instantly excited!
Thank you so much for investing in my classroom and helping to make school more engaging and fun!”

Educating ALL of US!
Funded Nov 26, 2018Thank you for your generous donation! This technology has enabled my students to view live video of me or a classmate solving problems in math. Sometimes we cover difficult concepts like division. It is much easier to model the set up of a problem on paper using the document camera than on a dry erase board. I am also able to model with manipulative under the camera when I don't have enough for every student do it it on their own. It has been very exciting for my students to be able to use the camera themselves. They display their own work to use as examples for their classmates. Even the students who have not been as vocal in class, have warmed up to solving a problem under the camera. Again, thank you for your involvement in my students' education.”

Funded Aug 25, 2018My students were so excited when the boxes with our new wobble cushions and stools came in! They were amazed by the generosity of other people, most of whom they had never even met.
I have seen a large impact with these items in my classroom. Students seek out the materials whenever possible. Many of my students have difficulties focusing, so the cushions have been a great touch to help occupy their movements while they are still concentrating on their work.
While I teach small group lessons at my table, students are often seen rocking back and forth while solving math problems. Although there is movement, it does not distract from what we are working on or disrupt others because of the amazing wobble stools.
Thank you so much for having an impact on my students' learning!”

Engage Us Through Books!
Funded Sep 11, 2015We are enjoying all of our wonderful new books! When the books arrived, we had an unpacking party where we laid all the books out and students were immediately able to explore the different books. After that, we've chosen a different book to read as a class and discussed the different features, characters, and elements within the book. As a class, we chose to order lots of informational text. Learning how to understand the different parts of informational text is difficult for fourth graders, so we focus on using these new books to engage us and learn how to decode the text.
Reading in our class can vary greatly. Some days we are reading as a whole class, and some days we are reading independently for fluency and comprehension. At any time students have completed their assignments, they are allowed to read a book. The new books have encouraged some disengaged readers to pick up a new book and find a comfy spot to read.
Several students in my class have become more interested in reading since receiving the books. I have 5 students reading below grade level that were uninterested in the larger chapter books because they couldn't actually read them. The new nonfiction books intrigue them and aren't as obvious to other students that they aren't reading larger, more complex books.
Again, thank you so much for making a difference in my classroom. Many of these students cannot fathom why anyone would want to give them anything. Your donation has taught them that people who don't even know them can still care about their success in life!”

Ms. Gregory
