  • The Pre-K Menagerie: Farm, Insects, Jungle, Ocean, & Pets

    Funded Mar 17, 2011

Thanks to all who participated in fulfilling The Pre-K Menagerie. Your support was overwhelming. I received contributions from numerous donors in various locales and the collaborative effort was a success!

The materials you have all helped provide will enrich five specific themes of study: Farm, Insects, Jungle, Ocean, and Pets. My students were excited to try out the new binoculars because we now have six pairs and they all work! They used them inside the classroom on a rainy day to keep an eye on the weather outside. We look forward to observing the changes that come with spring. I demonstrated the Big Screen Microscope with slides and they were amazed by the close-up images. I shared the Learning Centers and 99 Storytelling Kits with my classes, but explained they would have to wait to use the materials during our upcoming animal units in April and May.

As I plan these units, I've been hit with the 'new goodies' bug, as well. am full of enthusiastically planning these units excited to announce that this project has come true!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. CUEVA

  • Cooks in the Pre-K Kitchen

    Funded Feb 19, 2011

Thanks to all of you who made Cooks in the Pre-K Kitchen a reality. This was my first project and I was touched by the contributions of parents, family members, friends, and other donors across the country. I received the items the day before our monthly Parent Meeting and they were on display for all to see as they arrived. Both parents and students were excited to view the materials firsthand and impressed by their timely delivery.

My students couldn't wait to get into our 'New&Improved' House Center. They enjoy filling our new shopping cart with items from our expanded pantry that now includes meat, fish, cheese, and a variety of breads. Students are learning about weight by experimenting with the balance scale. A set of dishes and cookware that is new and complete has inspired my students to become immaculate housekeepers. They are so proud of the project we earned!

After reading one of the books from the Literature Collection, my class is looking forward to a walking trip to a local supermarket so we can shop for items for our next cooking project. I've set aside some of the materials for a 3-week unit that combines the themes of Nutrition and Growing Things.

We couldn't have done it without you!! ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. CUEVA

This classroom project was brought to life by Chevron and 32 other donors.
I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything! Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, my students have loving, supportive families. Despite limited resources, they generously donate food items for our weekly 'cooking' activities. My students enjoy the opportunity to make their own snacks. They are also more willing to try new foods when presented in a fun, hands-on project with their classmates. For math, we taste carrots, cabbage, radishes, & celery & post our preferences on the "Which Bunny Vegetable is Your Favorite?" graph. We incorporate math & language skills when preparing a recipe like Cinnamon Bear Toast while reciting the poem "Fuzzy Wuzzy Was a Bear." We obviously can't do these things every day, so food/nutrition-related games, activities, & literature that reinforce math, language, & science skills are high-interest, major motivators for my students!
