I would have never anticipated my first year teaching would be from a computer; but as an educator, I have learned to pivot. So that is what I am doing, and now I am focused on making learning accessible and engaging for my students. I am aware of the needs of my students and that these materials are expensive and hard to keep track of at home. Thus, I am creating a "School Tools" kit so students can easily keep all their materials in one easily found spot. Students will be actively engaged during our class Google Meet calls as they use their whiteboards or journals to practice math and literacy. Students will be using their whiteboards and markers during Meet calls to practice math problems by writing out equations and drawing out problems. Students will practice writing their spelling words on their whiteboards. As well, they will use the whiteboards for phonics by hearing letter sounds, blends, and digraphs then writing the appropriate letters. The writing journals selected were chosen as the page format supports handwriting development and encourages picture drawing. These journals will be used for practicing independent writing. Then during Meet calls, students will be able to read from their journals to the class. My 1st graders are truly are becoming in charge of their learning, they don't get dropped off at school anymore but instead, need to remember to log on, find their materials, and be ready. Thus, students will be keeping all these materials in their project cases that I will be labelling "(Student Name)'s School Tools", so students can find all the school materials they need with ease. Thank you for your consideration and support for my students to make distance learning engaging and accessible.
