My students will benefit greatly from a class set of of high-quality and reliable TI-30 calculators. The calculators will help to ensure that by the end of the year, all students will be able to solve proportions, manipulate negative integers, and evaluate linear functions. While it's important that students are able to perform these operations on their own, having access to a calculator supports the learning process and allows students to check their work. In my class, I expect students to engage in inquiry-based learning to solve real-world math problems. Scientific calculators are an important tool for students to engage in inquiry so that they can quickly identify patterns and convert units. This allows students to focus on the real-world implications of the mathematics, rather than the lower-level computations. The calculators will also be an important modification for my special education students, who often struggle to access grade-level work. These calculators will allow them to focus on the specific task at hand, while not being tripped-up with basic computation errors. For example, students will learn to type fractions into the calculators so that they don't need to manually convert to decimals. A set of 40 calculators will provide each student in my four sections access to the hottest iMath model on the market.
