My students come with a variety of special needs including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Learning Disabilities, Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, and Developmental Delays. My students are hands-on learners. Work tasks, games, puzzles and clip cards hold their attention and reinforce skills in a way that worksheets cannot. I love watching my students grow and learn every day! While we use our limited special education department budget to purchase a supply of the requested Velcro, page protectors and laminating pages, we quickly run through them and buy additional supplies out of pocket. As a number of my students have severe learning disabilities, they need lots of reinforcement of skills to gain a true understanding of various concepts. A few worksheet pages and one game is not enough to ensure the students learn various topics and concepts. Having a variety of materials which we have created or found allow the students to get repeated practice of the concepts without boredom. These materials will ensure that games, clipcards, puzzles and tasks that are created for the students will be durable and easy to clean. Games printed can be put into page protectors to ensure they are not crumples. Clipcard and puzzles can be laminated to create durability. Velcro will be used to create a variety of individual task such as counting or matching activities. Having these supplies will allow me to grow my drawers of materials. Having a large variety of materials on a topic allows student to practice the skill over and over in a slightly different way to gain a full understanding and move the concepts into their long term memory. This will also allow me to use the materials created over and over for years to come.
