For indoor recess, I'm requesting board games, wooden blocks, and LEGO bricks. All of these items will allow my students to be productively engaged and positively interact with each other. My goal is to provide opportunities for productive play to balance the rigor of instructional periods in our classroom. My students are high-energy and creative. They thrive when provided opportunities for structured social activities and teamwork. Additionally, research shows that students who are allowed daily break periods will be better equipped to perform better during academic periods. Play in the classroom is an integral part of the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and social skills. Board games such as Who's Who and Battleship support the use of context clues. Word games, like Scrabble, allow students authentic opportunities to apply word study skills while Monopoly reinforces foundational math skills. Blocks and LEGO bricks support the development of gross motor and critical thinking skills and provide limitless opportunities for creativity. There are many games and resources for high-quality play. Thank you for helping me get them into my students' hands!
