Funded Dec 4, 2019Exceptional play is when children can actually be involved in learning and not just use the paper and pencil method. They are doing real-world activities. Children are playing by making food purchases and adding to find the total amount. For science, we used gears, Lego builders and coasters to demonstrate what engineers do. They build and tried different ways to make things. Through trial and error, students learned how to get something to function. They put pieces together and modify it until it works.
You can't imagine how their little eyes lit up and how they smiled from ear to ear when they saw all the materials we got. Their excitement and happiness could be heard. As quickly as they saw the material coming out of the boxes, they began asking questions.
Our next step to create a functional pinball machine and continue to be engineers and real-world problem solvers. These hands-on projects are just what the children need in order to apply skills and ideas to real-world practice. For math, we are starting a subtraction unit. The students will then be able to use the cash register again to purchase and find how much money they will have left. The best thing about having these materials is that it helps foster conversation and they developed great vocabulary. We are all truly grateful for your help, your donation to bring us to new heights.”
With gratitude,
