In 4th grade we begin to work in literature circles using novels where students are able to engage in independent groups that are student led. Stuart Little, Frog and Turtle are lower level novel that I can use with my special education students. The Mouse and the Motorcycle would be a novel I can use with my higher readers. Each student can enjoy the novel groups at their own level and skill set. No one is left out of the great experience of literature circles using novels. In literature circles using novels, small groups of students gather together to discuss a piece of literature in depth. The discussion is guided by students' response to what they have read. You may hear talk about events and characters in the book, the author's craft, or personal experiences related to the story. Students reshape and add onto their understanding as they construct meaning with other readers. Finally, literature circles using novels is a way to guide students to deeper understanding of what they read through structured discussion and extended written and artistic response.
