My school is a low income Title 1 school. For many of my students, the only opportunity for them to have equipment to use for physical activity is in my class. My gym closet has a variety of equipment. I have basketballs, footballs, soccer balls, and even tennis racquets. The problem with my equipment is that it is tailored towards the 3rd-5th graders. I don't have enough equipment that I can use with my K-2nd graders. Developmentally appropriate equipment is crucial to my students success. With the older kids I like to play team games, and cooperative activities. With K-2 I focus more on skill development manipulative skill, and motor skill learning. I do this through implementing stations. The equipment I am asking for will provide my students with the opportunity to develop the skills that they will utilize for the rest of their lives. I struggle to come up with games and stations because my equipment is not age appropriate for primary grades. It also is a safety concern. I often have no choice but to use the equipment I have, which can be dangerous for the younger students. An example is with racquets. They are too large and heavy for the young students. However, when doing a racquet unit I have no choice but to have them use it. The paddles I asked for will help this by allowing my students to use foam paddles to learn, rather than a metal tennis racquet. In donating to the project, you will ensure my students are given every opportunity to learn.
