  • Book Bags and Privacy Shields for My 2nd Graders!

    Funded Sep 1, 2021

THANK YOU from the bottom of our heart for donating to our class project, Book Bags and Privacy Shields for my 2nd Graders. We've really been enjoying our new privacy shields. It may seem simple, but they are a great tool for students to pull out during an assessment, or just anytime they need a little space. Some of them refer to them as their "office" and the provide a private cozy space right at their desk to work.

The book bags have been such a helpful tool in our classroom. My students felt VERY special to know that people all over Michigan and the United States donated so they could be the first class to use these book bags. They allow my students to choose books from our classroom library that interest them and keep them safely and neatly in their desks. They pull these book bags out numerous times a day to enjoy their books and they go "book shopping" once a week in our classroom library to choose new books to put inside. They've been so careful to treat these new bags with love and care so that kiddos can enjoy them for years to come! We are looking forward to the New Year where we will be switching out many of our books and begin exploring chapter books and other book series. This is often the time when students begin to fall in love with a particular character or series. It is so fun to see!

Your donation and continued support is so appreciated. I am always hesitant to post a project and ask for help, but whenever I do, I am overwhelmed by the love and support we receive from family, friends, and strangers.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Jackson

  • Behavior Basics

    Funded Aug 27, 2018

Thank you again for your generous donations to our classroom. We have been using the Behavior Basics program for several weeks and the kiddos are really enjoying reading about and learning about the social skills needed to behave appropriately in the classroom and school setting.

One of my favorite parts of the program is how every lesson (every "skill"), is tied to a picture book, so not only are students learning valuable social skills, but they also have the opportunity to connect those skills with some of their favorite stories and picture books.

The program also has a component where we can "catch" each other demonstrating one of the skills we've learned. I love the positive reinforcement and pride this builds in my students.

I can't wait to continue to use this program with my kiddos as the year progresses. Thank you again for supporting our class!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Jackson

  • School to Home Reading Connection!

    Funded May 24, 2018

Thank you again for your generous donations for our School to Home Reading Connection project! I was so excited to kick off this school year with our new resources. As I'm finishing up beginning of the year assessments, I've been able to match my students with a reading level and will soon be sending home leveled readers nightly for them to share with their parents. So often, I have parents say that their children can't read when in reality, they just don't have books available to them at the correct reading levels. Through this project, my students will be able to show their families that they ARE readers! I cannot tell you how much this will mean to them!

There is nothing like a new book, so when the boxes of books arrived, my students were SO EXCITED! The bookshelf has been put to great use housing the books in individual bins by level, and this makes my management of the school to home reading program very easy. I am looking forward to watching my students grow as readers, and hopefully expanding my reading library to even higher levels as the year continues! Thank you again for your continued support of my special kiddos!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Jackson

  • Adapted Books and Calming Spaces!

    Funded Apr 25, 2018

Thank you again for your support of our Adapted Books and Calming Spaces project! This was a combination project that made it possible for me to create adapted books for my students to enjoy and also helped create a calming corner for our classroom.

With the use of the binding machine, I have been able to create a variety of different books already for my students. I have been able to create books that teach our social studies or science topics, but are created at various levels so my students can read them on their own. They have LOVED being able to read about our topics all by themselves! I'm also starting to take classic children's pictures books like, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, and adapt it so that my students with significant language impairments can follow along and retell the story. It is amazing what you can do with a printer, velcro, and a binding machine!

Our classroom calming corner has been put to great use already. With the materials purchased with this project, I've actually been able to create a second corner this year, which was much needed! My special kiddos are learning how to self regulate and having a safe spot in our classroom to do this is very important. I look forward to watching them grow in this very important life skill.

Thank you again for your support! I look forward to sharing more exciting things about my classroom with you all in the future!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Jackson

  • A Comfy and Cozy Classroom

    Funded Feb 4, 2018

I cannot thank you enough for your generous donations to our Comfy and Cozy classroom project! When the 8 HUGE boxes arrived at school, my students were beyond excited to learn what was inside. They had been sitting on ripped, stained, and flat bean bags, so they were elated when we opened up the boxes and discovered our brand new, fluffy bean bags!

My students have been using these bean bags throughout the day. Their favorite time is quiet time, when I turn the lights down low, play soft music, and give them a chance to curl up on the bean bags with a good book. They look forward to this relaxing time everyday. Some of my students have also been using the bean bags when they feel like they need a moment to themselves to regroup and calm down. It has been so awesome to watch them learn to regulate their own behavior and take initiative to calm themselves down.

Thank you again for your donation and support of my classroom of very special kiddos.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Jackson

  • Book Bags for Eager Readers!

    Funded Aug 22, 2015

I cannot begin to thank you enough for your generous donations to the Book Bags for Eager Readers project! I wish I could have captured the look on my students' faces as I unpacked the boxes filled with our brand new book bags during the first week of school. The students were so excited to start filling their bags with books to read and enjoy. When I told them that people from all over their town, state, and country had donated their money to help buy these bags, they felt so special! It is amazing how something that seems so simple as a book bag can bring such joy to a child's learning.

My students have been using these book bags since the very first week of school. Each week they go "Book Shopping" in our classroom library and fill their bags with books at their reading level, as well as with other books that are of interest to them. They use these books bags several times throughout the day and during our Reading Workshop time to read to themselves or read to buddies. They have learned to take such good care of their bags so that they can be enjoyed and utilized by many more students in the years to come.

These book bags have been so helpful for my students because it gives them the opportunity to focus on 5-6 "just right" books for them each week. A classroom library full of books can be overwhelming, but with the book bags, students can focus on just a few books per week so they can really dive deep into their books to gain fluency and comprehension skills as they read. They are often reading the books in their book bags several times throughout the week to really gain an understanding of what they read. It has been so fun as their teacher to watch their love for reading grow in such a short time already this school year!

Thank you so much for your donations. Please know that you have impacted the reading of 25 eager 2nd graders this year and many more to come in the future!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Jackson
