Why?...What's the purpose?...How is this applicable?... These are questions my high school students would ask. They are intrigued with knowledge, and they seek relevance of content to their lives. Students traditionally sit inside the classrooms six hours a day and take notes on lectures. Look around and some students are able to focus for less than half an hour. Some are ready to move from concrete to discussion of abstract ideas, while others are lost. So how can I engage all students? By creating a student-centered learning environment in which all students are active participants in their own learning. My students come from diverse cultural backgrounds and possess various learning modalities from visual to kinesthetic. Learning becomes more exciting for all of my students when I embrace their unique qualities and provide them with the opportunity to interact - whether they interact with each other and/or they interact with what little resources they have.
