Our town is about 5,200 and we are located in the Delta, the poorest region of our state. The cost of living is 9% higher here compared to the rest of our state. The population density is 752 per sq mi which is 1256% higher than the Arkansas average and 730% higher than the national average.
Our local Army Base no longer houses troops and was reduced to a military production facility which dramatically affected our local economy.
My sophomore students are eager learners, have hopes and dreams of leaving this little town for big cities and bright lights. They feel that they can improve global issues like global warming, want to study genetics and help create treatments and cures or even prevent genetic disorders. Our classroom pets have allowed them hands on study by breeding Guinea Pigs. Our high school serves just over 900 students, grades 9-12 with a graduation rate of 98% and 20% on free or reduced lunch.
