POET X is the perfect book selection for our 8th grade girls' book club! Providing a copy of a new book for each of our book club members would be a great way to begin the new year. POET X won the National Book Award for Young People's Literature and would be an excellent book to add our students' personal libraries. POET X is an exceptional novel that our students would truly benefit from reading. Our students want books that they can relate to and seeing a protagonist dealing with similar struggles can help our students overcome their own challenges. POET X is written in English but has several parts of the dialogue written in Spanish. A majority of our students speak Spanish and it is important to see themselves represented in books. Books that serve as mirrors can help students truly identify with the characters and feel that they are not alone. POET X is a novel in verse or a novel that is written in poetic stanzas. A novel in verse is shorter than a typical novel and therefore more appealing to many of our students who may not have or make time to read longer novels. It is our hope that our students connect with POET X, for all of its great qualities, fall in love with the book and ultimately fall in love with reading.
