Help Us Strike Up Some Fun

Please help me allow my students to practice bowling for Special Olympics. My students with Autism and developmental disabilities like hands-on learning materials, and the outdoor table and swing will significantly assist them.

  • Help our Garden Grow into a Sensory Wonderland

    Funded Jul 20, 2021

We received a variety of supplies to begin our sensory outdoor wonderland. My students have been able to experience the outdoors and actively engage with plants, the bird baths and feeders, along with our garden of herbs and vegetables. Upon receiving the multiple boxes of supplies, the student's stood around waiting impatiently for me to open them. Once the boxes were opened, it was like Christmas. They were very excited and were questioning when we would install everything.

    We really appreciate your generosity.”

  • Velcro-ing our Way to Success

    Funded Jul 12, 2021

I appreciate your donation to my classroom project. The velcro was a definite need for my students. It is utilized for their visual schedules, matching materials to their correct spaces, and allowing my students to become independent learners.

We received the box of supplies, and my students were giddy with excitement. They assisted with opening the box. Once the box was opened, we passed around the boxes of velcro so the students could feel the objects.

Their excitement was contagious and they were in awe!

Now, because of your generous gift, we are equipped with a material that is integral to my students learning and academic engagement.”

  • Blinded by our LIGHTS

    Funded Aug 12, 2021

Opening this new gift was a treat in itself. My students were giddy, excited, and they couldn't wait to get the package opened. The students even assisted with putting them up (opening the package, unfolding the filter, and then handing them to me). Once the light filters were installed over our fluorescent lights, it dramatically reduced the eye strain that my students struggled with daily. The filters assisted with preventing many headaches that my student encountered throughout the year. Having the filters also created a more calming classroom environment which has allowed my students to excel in their academic learning.”

  • Special Olympics Help Us STAND OUT

    Funded Sep 24, 2021

Unboxing our new equipment was like receiving an early Christmas present! My students were very eager to work with the new javelins to improve their throwing distances.

Previously, our students only worked with a javelin when we went to Special Olympics. Now with your generous gift, students are excited and eager to utilize their gross motor skills to improve their strength and previous throwing distances. My students looked at our new finish line with AMAZEMENT! We previously used a string with some colored flags to signal the finish line. Now, my students at NISH are the talk of the town with their new and spectacular finish line.

Thank you for your amazing generosity. You are truly a blessing to my students and my classroom.”

  • Life Skills in a Box

    Funded Sep 24, 2021

A sincere thank you is in order when I received your donation of plastic bins. Opening the box with my students is a gift within itself-they loved every minute of it. We made it a learning activity by counting the boxes. We also used their fine motor skills by allowing them to snap the lids on. Happiness radiated in my room that day. You may say its just plastic boxes but to us......it's a gift that we will utilize daily.

These bins allowed me to store necessary academic learning items and allow my students to become independent learners.

My students range in learning varies tremendously; these task boxes not only engage them academically but allow them to be independent with their learning.

These boxes allowed my classroom to come organized and more accessible to my students as well.

Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and giving nature.”

  • Autism Students Communicate Using Visual Schedules Independently

    Funded Apr 28, 2021

My students and I were so excited when the packages began to arrive.

My fabulous supplies arrived right in the middle of Covid time. Many of my special education students did not know whether they would be attending virtually or in person.

These items made a definite impact in my classroom. The printer allowed me to personalize each student's visual schedule in color which is AMAZING! It also allowed me to construct various task boxes in color and utilize the laminator to make them last longer. My students were very eager to engage with their learning on a daily basis due to the colored items. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this thoughtful donation to my classroom.”

My students utilize a visual schedule daily. This schedule is made using card stock, colored ink, and we try to laminate for durability. Utilizing this technique enhances learning and communication for individuals with autism spectrum disorder. These types of visual support systems provide teachers and parents with the tools needed to help children reach development goals and achieve success in life. Visual Schedules are a graphic representation of scheduled tasks and activities. They are very useful for breaking down tasks that have multiple steps and ensuring that my students follow rules and deadlines. Visual schedules reduce anxiety by providing consistency while also reducing resistance that comes with certain activities. They also provide structured predictability. Students with autism must know what is coming next so they can emotionally prepare for the upcoming activity. This presents the student with expectations that they can then manage, helping to ease transition periods. Although most people associate visual schedules with pictures or photographs, events can be triggered through toys, objects and even word phrases. The visual schedule itself is a constant reminder to students where they should be, what they should be doing and when she should start and finish. This allows my students to increase their self-esteem and become independent learners.
